GENETICS: EXPLORING THE ADVENTIST GENOME
Our theme for Youth Ministry in 2017 is Genetics 2.0: Living the Adventist Genome.
Why this theme?
As I survey youth ministry in our Conference and around Australia, one thing that we have lost is our sense of Adventist Identity. This is demonstrated through young people and young adults not understanding what we believe (Our Theology), why we exist (Our Mission), or how we began as a denomination (Our Beginning). Over the past decades, church leaders and Pastors have not been intentional in passing this knowledge and experience on. We have allowed a generation of church attendees (not counting those who have left) drift in this quandary of what we stand for, how we minister and what we do. We assume that if they are coming to church, they ‘get’ what it mean’s to be Adventist. This is not the case.
Next Steps ...
Given this, we as a youth ministry team want to explore what it means to be an Adventist Christian. We will be exploring our heritage, how we started as a denomination, see how God has lead us in the past as well as look at those doctrines from scripture that make us unique. We also want to be true to the Bible and use scripture to explain who and what we believe.
I would love young people to say “I never knew that about our pioneers” or “is that what we believe about that doctrine.” I want young people to have ‘aha’ moments and fall in love with Jesus and fall in love with His church.

All of what we are hoping to achieve will be couched in love. John 13:34, 35 says “A new command I give you: Love one another. As I have loved you, so you must love another. By this everyone will know that you are my disciples, if you love one another.” Love must be the basis by which we practice what it means to be a disciple or follower of Jesus Christ.
Let’s begin the journey together to explore the Adventist Genome!
